Former Site of Wakayama Junior High School under the Old Education System

During the Edo period, Nishinomaru, which is mostly an open space now, had a magnificent palace, a teahouse and a Noh stage. As the time turned from Edo period to Meiji period, those structures were gradually demolished and Wakayama Junior High School under the old education system was built on this site.

Established in 1879, Wakayama Junior High School was located at Okayama on the south of Wakayama Castle at the beginning. In 1889, new school buildings were built here. During the 26 years before the school moved in 1915 to where the Prefectural Toin High School is now, education was carried out at this site. The commemorative camphor tree on the side with its stone monument was planted by the graduated students in 1896.
